Is Apple Going To Accept Gift Cards for the iPhone?

At 8AM tomorrow, the Apple iPhone be unveiled at your nearby Apple or AT&T retail store.

In October, 2007,  I read that Apple did not allow gift cards or even cash for these purchases. The reason for the strict rules was to keep a paper trail on every single iPhone being sold. The question is, how can anyone refuse cash? Doesn’t the American dollar clearly state: “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBITS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE?”

So I did some research. According to the Apple website, you can use the Apple Gift Card to purchase anything sold by Apple (except another Apple Gift Card, an iTunes Gift Certificate or purchases at the iTunes Music Store), including products from both Apple and third-party makers.

Seems like just about anything, huh? We’ll see about that.

I’m going to call the store today to see if they are able to accept gift cards for the iPhone. I’ve got $200 I’m dying to spend — and if they decline, I’m going to print out the above terms and conditions and hope they honor them. Fingers crossed.

edit: SO, I called the store, you are able to use a Apple Gift Card, but you must have a valid credit card, to finish the purchase, to verify credit. So bring your card and your credit card. A gift card without a credit card will not be accepted.

Tips for the big day tomorrow?

To purchase and activate iPhone 3G, you need the following:
* Credit card
* Social security number
* Valid government-issued photo ID
* Current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)
If you already own an iPhone, remember to sync it with iTunes one last time before you get your new iPhone 3G.

When to shop:
I’m sure the lines will be insane.
1. Pick a less crowded mall or store
2. Avoid the afternoons, Shop early or late. I think Friday night will be crazy though.

Ok guys, ready, set, iPhone. I’ll beat you to it.

Edit:

They accepted my gift card. You are good to go.
